6] Neuropathic pain
Many degenerative central neuronal diseases (for example: stroke, parkinsonism, Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease) are not very satisfactorily managed. It is very important to develop neuroprotectants to prevent neuronal death induced by ischemia-reperfusion, free radical, dopamine, b-amyloid peptide etc. We focus on the develop of the neuroprotective agents for the following neurodegenerative diseases, such as stroke, Parkinsonism, Huntington’s disease, glutamate-induced neurotoxicity and Alzheimer’s disease with the specific animal models and the primary cultures. We have also found a few compounds which are able to enhance learning and memory. In addition, we also deveted to the study of neuronal plasticity, mechanism and treatment of neuropathic pain. To address this, electrophysiological, immunohistochemistry and biochemical approaches are used. We also corporate with clinician to study the metabolism of bone and develop new drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis and cancer metastasis to bone. Bone formation and bone resorption are evaluated using both in vitro cell cultures and in vivo animal models. We have technically transferred a protein drug targeting avb3 integrin to pharmaceutical company.
